Youth Work is education for life. It is about helping young people
answer questions such as ‘What sort of person am I?’, ‘What type of person do I
want to become?’ and ‘What sort of community do I want to live in?’. It works by
building relationships with young people (usually between 11-19) and offering
them programmes of activities in informal surroundings. This may be in Village
Halls or on street corners, anywhere that young people are. Young people are
encouraged to learn new skills, acquire new knowledge and reflect upon their
attitudes. We can offer a safe place for groups to experiment with changing
roles and to take greater control over their lives.
As part of Community Education’s role to support the development
of young people within our catchment area, we run various youth clubs and
projects
throughout the year in line with County priorities and local need. The Youth
Service runs The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme (D
of E) for students in Years 9 & Above (Bronze & Silver Awards) as well
as the
Youth Parliament and
Active Citizens In School (ACIS) which is where young people can
volunteer for their school, community or other cause, fundraising or
providing a service of some sort. Voluntary time committed can result in an
accreditation. More info on both of these can be sought from the staff in
the Youth Office.
For the mechanically minded the Kit Car Project is held on a Wednesday after
school.
There's really something for all young people, so if you're interested or want
to get involved in any of these activities you can get more information by
