Soham Village College
Foundation Technology & Languages College

The Principal's Letter to Parents

Dear Parents and Carers

I am delighted to welcome you to Soham Village College. We are proud of our excellent reputation as a highly successful comprehensive community college serving East Cambridgeshire. We are one of the first schools in the country to be allowed two specialisms and so Soham Village College has been from Easter 2006 both a specialist Technology College and a specialist Languages College.

Here you will find staff and students committed to high-quality learning. Soham Village College is a leader in the the research and development of very good teaching and learning in and beyond our classrooms. ICT is used innovatively and effectively across the school. We are proud of our rich curriculum provision. There are appropriate programmes of study for everyone and so students of all abilities and interests are able to learn well with subjects and courses which interest and motivate them.

There are also some wonderful opportunities which lie beyond lessons. A wide range of educational visits is on offer; students and staff can get involved in sport, music and drama. Highlights of our musical year include the Young Musician of the year competition which 140 students enter and our carol service at Ely Cathedral. Our annual production attracts full audiences and enthusiastic student support. Coming our way in March 2009 will be The Mikado. Sport in the College goes from strength to strength, both in the extra-curricular sports teams and in the developing Inter-House competitions.

There is a wide range of support to ensure that our College is a caring place to be. Every individual matters. Every individual is expected to show respect and care for others. In turn each individual is given every opportunity to achieve their potential at Soham.

Do have a look at our web-site www.sohamcollege.org.uk to get a flavour of the rich learning environment at the College.

Have a look also at our 2007 Ofsted Report which described the College as a ‘good school with some outstanding features.’ The report also said our ‘students reach good standards and make good progress in their academic work because they are taught well, have good attitudes to learning and behave well.’ It was good to receive the judgement that ‘the school is a positive and cohesive community.

I hope this prospectus gives you a flavour of life and learning at Soham Village College. Do visit us if you would like to look around or contact us if we can be of any help in providing further information.

I look forward to welcoming you in person soon.
