Caring for Students

Introduction

‘The Personal Development of students is good, and in some respects it is outstanding. Behaviour is good, particularly in public areas where many strong friendship groups, together with students’ respect for each other, help create a strong sense of community.’ Ofsted 2007

Bottisham, Buwell and Soham Locality Team

We work with children and young people who attend Bottisham Village College, Soham Village College and their partner primary schools to provide joined up responsive services for children and young people living in our locality.

We work very closely with other County Council staff who provide services for children and families. We also have very strong links with all the schools in our Locality and staff from other agencies such as health and voluntary and independent sectors.

The Services we deliver:-

  • We provide young people (13-19) with information and confidential advice on Education, Employment and training. We aim to help young people remove barriers to achieving their personal goals. These services are marketed under the Connexions brand.
  • We provide social and personal development activities for young people aged 11-19 and encourage young people to make a positive contribution to their communities.
  • We support secondary schools by working with students who have social, emotional and behavioural problems to support them to reach their full potential.
  • We make sure that children of compulsory school age attend school regularly and punctually; therefore receiving the education they are legally entitled to. We also carry out work around child employment, children in entertainment and home education.
  • We provide support to parents in raising their children and helping them get the best out of life.
  • We work closely with secondary and primary schools to develop services outside the school day and during school holidays. This can include breakfast and after school clubs, groups and activities, holiday programmes of activities, family learning opportunities and much more.
  • We work with children’s centres, Day nurseries, preschools, childminders and out of school providers to ensure high quality early years education and childcare.

The Year Head & Tutor Groups

On entry to the College, students are placed in mixed ability tutor groups and are the responsibility of the Tutor who is supervised by a Year Head. The Year Head is responsible for the organisation and administration of the Year Group. It is the Year Head who is most likely to contact you when necessary, although you are encouraged to contact the Form Tutor in the first instance if you have a question or concern.

The teaching groups in Year 7 consist of broad bands of ability and students are in the same groups for most subjects. This enables the students to establish friendships and become familiar with their new surroundings. In Years 8 and 9 students are placed in specific groups for every subject, according to their particular abilities.

Discipline

We encourage every student to adopt a mature approach towards self-discipline, and thereby maintain a positive environment in which students may learn. A copy of the College’s behaviour policy is available from the Principal’s PA by request.

The Form Tutor

The care and guidance of students is centred upon the Form Tutor. Daily contact with the students is supported by consultation with subject teachers, enabling the Form Tutor to maintain an informed and caring attitude towards those in his or her charge. This applies to personal and social matters, to studies and homework, to conduct and to discipline.

Dealing with Bullying

‘Bullying and intimidation are infrequent and resolved effectively’ Ofsted April 2007

The College policy on bullying raises the awareness of all members of the community - students, parents and staff - to the unacceptability of aggressive behaviour. Students are encouraged to speak to a teacher should bullying ever occur. Such complaints are always investigated and, if necessary, acted upon.

The effective and sensitive approach of the staff towards anti-social behaviour creates a secure and stable environment for effective learning. Such circumstances meet with the wholehearted approval of our existing and prospective parents and are a contributory factor in the College being over subscribed.

Assemblies

Each year group has two assemblies per week which all students are expected to attend. Parents have the right to withdraw students from this and if they wish to do so should apply to the Principal in writing at the start of the schoolyear.
